Ovation Upsell help

Getting started

Turn Ovation on in your checkout settings and make your first offer active.

Ovation offers a customer one more product right after they pay. The main place it does that is the post-purchase page, the page Shopify shows between payment and the order confirmation. A customer who accepts there has the product added to the order they just placed, with no card to type in again, and Shopify works out the price, the tax and the shipping.

Nothing is offered until you have at least one offer. Turning Ovation on in your checkout settings is only for the post-purchase page, and the Thank you and Order status blocks work without it. When you first open Ovation, its Home page is a Setup guide that walks through each step and ticks it off as it becomes true.

1. Turn Ovation on in checkout settings

Shopify shows a post-purchase page from one app at a time: the one your store picks in its checkout settings. No app can pick itself, so this step is yours.

  1. In your Shopify admin, open Settings → Checkout and scroll to the card called Post-purchase page.
  2. Under Use an app to add features at checkout after payment, switch the choice from None, or from another app, to Ovation Upsell.
  3. Save, then come back to Ovation.

If the choice is ever changed back, Ovation’s Home page says so under What needs you, and Settings marks Post-purchase page as Not picked.

2. Add your first offer

Open Offers. With no offer yet, its main button is Offer the best pairing for each order: it opens the best pairing for each order, one offer that chooses a product for each order, with nothing to pick. Add offer opens every other start. Under Ready-made are four offers: click one to see what the customer gets, then Start with this, and it fills in a discount and the wording and leaves the products to you. Under From your orders, From one product you pick opens What sells with a product, which lists what sells with a product you pick, from your own orders and catalogue, and Start blank, at the foot of the dialog, opens an empty offer. Nothing is saved until you click Save.

The smallest offer that works needs two choices:

  • Under When they buy, the products or collections that trigger it, or After every order.
  • Under Offer them, the product the customer is offered once they have paid.

Everything else has a sensible starting value, and Creating an offer goes through each part. Click Save, and the offer runs from the next order on the pages it is turned on for, and at once on the Order status page if it is one of them, earlier orders included. A new offer starts on the pages set in Settings, under New offers. The post-purchase page needs no block to be added, while the Thank you and Order status pages show it once their blocks are in place.

3. See it for yourself

Place an order on your own store that holds one of the offer’s trigger products (for an offer set to After every order, any order will do), and pay by card. After payment, the post-purchase page shows your offer. Shopify shows that page once for each order, so reloading it afterwards does not bring it back.

Pay by card when you test. Shopify skips the post-purchase page for some payment methods, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal, from any app. When no offer shows has the whole list.

A test order works too. Ovation leaves your own test orders out of its Home, Analytics and A/B test figures, but a post-purchase page it answered on one still counts toward your plan. On a development store, that count never pauses or charges anything. If the offer does not appear, open Orders in Ovation and find the order: it shows each step Ovation took and where it stopped.

How the page looks

The post-purchase page takes its background, its type and the colour of the pay button from your checkout branding, the same way your checkout does. The layout, the headline and the words on the buttons are yours to set in Settings, under Post-purchase page, with a preview beside the controls. Changes apply from the next order.

A product can carry a badge, a short line above its name such as “Popular add-on” or words of your own. You choose it for each product in the offer, under Adjust, and you write your own badges in Settings, under Post-purchase page. A badge is your claim about the product, so keep it true.

What comes next

  • The setup guide’s last three steps put Ovation on four more pages: the Thank you and Order status pages a customer sees after paying, and your own product and order pages in the Shopify admin. See Showing Ovation on four more pages.
  • What your plan counts, and what happens when a store goes past it, is in Plans and billing.
